Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Threats in Pakistan By: Sohail Abbas

Today we are living in a very unsafe world, the world crises ridden due to different threats, Pakistan state is confronting enormous problem in traditional and non-traditional security threats.

Traditional security issues are about the threat against the essential values of the state, territorial integrity, and political sovereignty. All such means, as well as the essence of traditional security, are constantly changing under the impact of technological innovation, new ideas, and political evolution. Traditional notion is concerned with the use of military, war, balance of power and alliance buildings, traditional notion is concerned with the state and its governing institutions. It is confined to state only by thinking of internal and external threats. Its focus is on force only to achieve the target. Pakistan is confronting both Traditional security threat and Non-Traditional Security threats at a time, since independence, Pakistan always prone to traditional security threat in different angles, Pakistan and India fought many wars, because Islamabad and New-Delhi foreign policy base on security threat for each other, both countries always treat for one another, Pakistan is not only unsafe from India rather Pakistan is also unsafe from Afghanistan side, according to time Afghan Taliban attack on Pakistan, and the other side Hegemon powers also dependent on Pakistan's Foreign Policy, its only external threats, unfortunately Pakistan is confronting many internal threats in different shapes like, Tahrik taliban Pakistan, sectarianism and many interested groups are the threat for traditional security of Pakistan.

In this article, my focus is non-traditional security threats, beside traditional threats, there are so many non-traditional/soft security threats which are lethal for human survival and for state. Non-traditional Security threats can be defined as " The challenges to the survival and well-being of people and states that arise primarily out of non-military sources, such as climate change, resources scarcity, infection diseases, natural disaster, irregular migration, food shortages, people smuggling, drug trafficking and transnational crime. it goes beyond military by threatening conditions necessary for human survival. It covers not only the state but also all individuals or humankind. it comprises cooperation, hence it protects human or global security."

Dr. Hussain Ara said that the advancement in science and technology, nuclear capability, militancy and environmental challenges are contributing towards enhancing these non-traditional threats. many time Pakistan affected due to soft threats through earthquake, floods and many other natural disease, the natural disasters do not come alone, they bring a lot of problems in their lap, if any natural disaster come then the region is going to poverty, in absolute term, people living in poverty will increase from 69 million in June 2018 to 87 million increase in poverty or an addition of 18 million people in first two years of the PTI government.

after the WW2, tremendous changes have been taking place in the entire world by transforming the entire world by global village. The advent of 21st century also brought so many challenges in the entire world. " every single day we are handling a half a dozen serious issue simultaneously. The threats that are coming at us in waves. they are very asymmetric, they are very different than in the 20th century... it is not just about a war on a terror...it has components relation to proliferation, to climate and energy economic security, cyber security, the illegal trafficking of humans, narcotics, terrorism, any number of things."

in the last of article, i want to discuss a current non-security threat, current non-traditional security threat is natural disease "Corona Virus" Corona Virus is not only security threat for Pakistan, it is the threat for the world, this virus has spreaded form from China Wuhan on December, corona virus has given surprise to whole world, even hegemon powers are hang in-front of this natural disease. According to World Health Organization (WHO) Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by newly discovered coronavirus. most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experiences mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. currently, there are no specific vaccine or treatments for COVID-19. in the world confirmed cases is almost 4 million, recovered 1 million plus and death 252K plus, Pakistan is also very badly effected in this disease, till now 22049 plus cases is reported, 514 deaths and 5801 recovered, day by day cases are increase, this natural disease has not come alone, it bring a lot of problems in their lap, , like poverty, after attacking of this disease in Pakistan everything is stop, like education and business field is stop, because of lock down, due to this non-traditional security threat thousands of people lost their job, many people are anxious for get piece of bread, hunger is increase very rapidly in Pakistan, so everyone is anxious because, from one side corona is attacking and other side hunger is waiting. Pakistan is minor power, here government have not much resources for give people. this is very hard time for Pakistan, if the world superpowers and world organizations like, World Bank, United nation, and Red Crescent etc., help Pakistan, then it’s helpful for Pakistan state to confronting this non-traditional security issue.
